[OSENWORLD] Actor Roh Jae-won, who played Nam-gyu in Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3, doesn’t think he was the series’ biggest villain—he points the finger at his co-star Im Si-wan, who portrayed the chilling character Lee Myung-gi, instead.
In an interview held on July 9, Roh reflected on the behind-the-scenes of the global Netflix phenomenon. His character, Nam-gyu, was a tenacious survivor who initially followed Thanos (played by Choi Seung-hyun, formerly known as T.O.P) and later added tension alongside Myung-gi (Im Si-wan) and Min-soo (Lee David).
While some cast members named Nam-gyu as the show’s most brutal villain, Roh disagreed. “The real villain was Im Si-wan,” he said without hesitation. His character Lee Myung-gi—nicknamed ‘Murder Myung-gi’ by fans—stood out as the most intense and terrifying presence throughout the season.
“Of course, Nam-gyu did a lot of bad things,” Roh admitted. “But once he met Myung-gi, it felt like he’d found his counterpart. Nam-gyu didn’t care about Thanos or Min-soo—but he felt recognized by Myung-gi. So I played him like someone who was just enjoying the ride, almost like he was tagging along on a mischief spree.”
But watching the later episodes after Nam-gyu’s exit, Roh said he was increasingly shocked by Myung-gi’s transformation. “What I did was nothing in comparison,” he said. “By the end, it was obvious—Myung-gi had become the most important figure in the story. He completely took over.”
One scene in particular left Roh stunned: “When Myung-gi said, ‘Just hand over the kid,’ I was speechless. He was standing there on the bridge in the final game, holding a rod… I never imagined he’d go that far.”
“Maybe he thought he had to win alone—I’m not sure,” Roh added. “But to make a choice like that, to actually try to kill a child… I didn’t see that coming.” He also pointed to another disturbing moment: “When he said, ‘Did something happen between you and Jun-hee?’—that line was chilling too.”
Roh praised Im Si-wan’s performance as unforgettable. “He was so convincing that I actually began to understand Myung-gi’s actions. He wasn’t just evil—he was desperate. It made complete sense for someone on the edge of death to fight like that to survive.”
Netflix’s Squid Game, first released in 2021, follows 456 contestants risking their lives in deadly games for a ₩45.6 billion (approximately $35 million USD) prize. After becoming a global sensation with Season 1, the series expanded into a trilogy, cementing its place as one of Netflix’s flagship franchises.
‘오징어 게임’ 시즌2와 시즌3에서 ‘남규’ 역으로 주목받은 배우 노재원이 꼽은 최악의 빌런은 자신이 아닌 임시완이었다.
노재원은 9일 오후 진행된 인터뷰에서 기자들과 만나 드라마 비하인드를 전했다. 그는 극 중 과거 인기 래퍼였던 타노스(최승현)를 추종하며 끈질긴 생존력을 보여주다가, 타노스 사후에도 명기(임시완), 민수(이다윗) 등과 함께 긴장감을 불어넣는 인물 ‘남규’로 열연했다.
일부 출연진은 남규를 최악의 빌런으로 꼽았지만, 정작 노재원은 “진짜 빌런은 임시완이었다”고 단언했다. ‘살인명기’라 불린 명기야말로 시즌 내내 가장 강렬한 악역이었다는 것이다.
그는 “물론 남규도 나쁜 짓을 많이 했다”고 인정하면서도 “남규는 명기를 만나 짝을 만난 기분이었다. 타노스도 무시하고, 민수도 무시하지만 명기만은 나를 인정해준다고 느껴서, 놀러 다니는 느낌으로 연기했다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “하지만 남규가 퇴장한 이후 후반부를 보면서 점점 명기의 연기에 충격을 받았다. 나 따위는 아무것도 아니었다. 결국 명기는 자신이 제일 중요한 인물이었다”고 혀를 내둘렀다.
특히 노재원은 “명기가 ‘아이만 넘겨’라고 말할 때 가장 놀랐다. 마지막 게임에, 다리 위에서 봉을 들고 그렇게 말하는데, 그렇게까지 할 줄은 몰랐다”며 충격적인 장면을 회상했다.
또한 "자기 혼자 우승하겠다는 생각이었는지는 몰라도, 그런 선택을 하고 그렇게 아이를 죽이려고 하면서까지 행동할 줄 몰랐다"면서 "‘준희(조유리)랑 뭐 있었냐’는 대사도 충격적이었다"고 덧붙였다.
노재원은 “임시완의 연기가 너무 인상깊었다. 그래서 명기의 행동도 이해가 되는 것 같았다. 벼랑 끝에서 자기가 죽을까 봐 살려고 그렇게 발악하는 게 너무나도 이해가 갔다”고 임시완의 열연에 감탄했다.
