[OSENWORLD] The new Apple TV+ music competition series KPOPPED has sparked debate over whether Japanese boy group JO1 fits the show’s concept, given that the 11-member group does not include any Korean members.
Criticism emerged as soon as JO1’s appearance was announced, with skeptics arguing that their inclusion runs counter to the show’s focus on K-pop collaborations. Formed in 2019 through the Japanese audition program Produce 101 Japan, JO1 debuted in 2020 and has primarily concentrated on activities within Japan.
Executive producer Lee Yeon-kyu addressed the concerns during an online press conference on August 29. “We asked ourselves how synergy could be created when pairing with Western artists,” he explained. “JO1 is a group formed through the K-pop training and production system, combined with a global approach. They’ve shown strong results on their world tour, which is why we wanted to feature them.”

Lee emphasized that JO1 embodies K-pop influences despite their nationality. “JO1 was thoroughly created through the K-pop system, which sets them apart from typical J-pop acts. If you listen to their music, the K-pop influence is unmistakable. Once you see their episode, you’ll understand — the energy on stage and the collaboration with overseas artists is exciting. Please watch first and then decide.”
Jointly produced by CJ ENM and Apple TV+, KPOPPED pairs K-pop artists with international pop stars to reinterpret each other’s hit songs. The lineup includes Psy with Grammy-winning rapper Megan Thee Stallion, ITZY with Spice Girls, ATEEZ with J Balvin, and KISS OF LIFE with Ava Max. The eight-episode series premiered on August 29.
