[OSENWORLD] A single line from Disney+ original drama Tempest has ignited another wave of cross-border controversy, placing Korean content under fire once again in China.
The scene, which includes a line delivered by lead actress Gianna Jun — “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border region.” — quickly sparked anger among Chinese audiences, calling it an insult to their country. In response, several of Jun’s commercial endorsements, including cosmetics and luxury watches, were reportedly pulled.
Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University acknowledged that viewers are free to express opinions about a drama, but noted a contradiction: “Disney+ is not available in China, just like Netflix. The fact that Chinese netizens are reacting means they watched it illegally, highlighting the irony of pirating content while criticizing it.”
Seo further emphasized that objections should be directed at the drama’s producers or Disney+ itself, not at the actress. He added, “As Korean content continues to attract global attention, Chinese netizens appear increasingly anxious, taking aim at K-content in any way possible.”
